The Lands of The Mattahunt Tribe

Welcome to Mattapan

Mattapan is a neighborhood in Boston, Massachusetts. Originally home to the Mattahunt tribe, it’s now home to a diverse group of residents with a large makeup of immigrants from the Caribbean. It’s also a great place to raise a family since the community is ever-evolving.

The area now encompassing Mattapan was settled by the English in 1630. The original tribe, the Mattahunt, gave the area its name of “Mattapan,” which translates to “a good place to be.” In the 1960s, blockbusting designed to destabilize the neighborhood affected many households, causing them to move out and change the demographics to what they are today.

Homes in Mattapan typically sell for an average of $614,700. The most predominant style in the area is Colonial. There are also many condos and townhomes for sale, with rent averaging at about $2,500.
